THE OTHERS

우리는 사람의 얼굴과 표정을 통해 한 사람을 기억한다. 초상은 오랫동안 사람을 바라보고 기록하는 방식이었다. 그러나 우리의 기억 속에는 사람의 모습만 남아 있는 것은 아니다. 어느 날의 풍경, 익숙한 사물, 스쳐 지나간 장면과 공간처럼 이름 붙이지 않은 것들도 한 사람의 시간과 함께 기억된다. 조윤진은 익숙한 초상의 바깥으로 시선을 옮긴다.
작가는 테이프를 붙이고 떼어내며 익숙한 사물과 인물을 조금 다른 모습으로 바라보게 한다. 서로 다른 색의 테이프를 겹겹이 쌓아 마치 여러 개의 페스츄리처럼 저마다의 모습을 드러내게 한다.
《THE OTHERS》는 인물을 바라보는 또 다른 방식에 관한 이야기이기도 하다. 사람과 함께 있었지만 쉽게 주목하지 않았던 것들, 지나간 시간 속에 남아 있던 것들까지 바라보며 조윤진은 초상의 범위를 조금씩 넓혀간다. 이번 전시에서 마주하는 풍경과 사물, 장면과 공간은 어쩌면 누군가의 기억을 이루는 작은 초상일지도 모른다
