To free ourselves from the macrostructures of historical discourse, the Live Projects Exhibition, as part of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021, focuses on the private and intimate stories of the city under the title of “Suspicious Footprints.” Just like children stepping on a manhole cover, tapping on a wall with a stick, and drawing their own maps with their own rules and signs, Suspicious Footprints aims to provide clues of the individual city that we seek—a city that is free from the conventional and conflictual language. Five writers were invited to compose narratives of their private experience of the city, using ‘scale’ as the keyword. Is it possible to invent a personal scale beyond the universal one(meter, kilometer, hour, minute, second, etc.)? What scale can we use to measure our gratitude, despair, loneliness, and happiness we feel living in the city? Giving shape to those intimate narratives composed by the writers, five teams of architects build physical sites that allow the audience to have a comprehensive experience with an extended range of empathy. Five structures set up in the area of Sewoon Plaza and Cheonggyecheon enable them to look in and imagine the private city.
